Saraland is a US city ​​in Alabama . Located in Mobile County , it is the county's third largest city and a suburb of Mobile . According to estimates by the United States Census Bureau , the city had a population of about 12,600 in 2004. Royal Dutch Shell operates an oil refinery in Saraland.

history

The current urban area of ​​Saraland was part of a fiefdom to Don Diego Alvarez, which is why his descendants gave the settlement the first name Alvarez Station . The city was later renamed Cleveland Station , after one of the settling families. The city's current name was reportedly given by CJ DeWitt, who moved here from the north for health reasons in 1890 and opened the first post office on the Southern Railroad in 1895. Accordingly, the place bears the name of DeWitt's wife Sara.

Saraland was sparsely populated until Mobiles expanded north in the 1940s and 1950s; the growth also accelerated the population growth in Saraland and in 1957 Saraland was incorporated as a city with 125 inhabitants at the time. At the United States Census 1960 the population had already grown to 4595, in 1980 the city had 9844 residents. In 2000 Saraland's population had risen to 12,288.

The worst train wreck in Amtrak history occurred on September 22, 1993 near Saraland on Big Bayou Canot . At around 2:53 a.m. local time, Amtrak's Sunset Limited , powered by three locomotives, was derailed while crossing the Bayou Canot Bridge on the route from Los Angeles , California to Miami , Florida with 220 people on board. 47 people were killed, many drowned, some burned in the rubble.

Demographics

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Saraland was inhabited by 12,288 people. The population density was 216.5 people per km ². There were 5138 housing units at an average of 90.5 per km ². The population of Saraland was 88.50% White , 8.97% Black or African American , 0.56% Native American , 0.46% Asian , 0.01% Pacific Islander , 0.37% said other races belong to and 1.13% named two or more races. 1.17% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Saraland were distributed to 4810 households out of which 31.8% were living in children under 18 years. 61.0% of households were married, 10.5% had a female head of the household without a husband, and 25.1% were not families. 21.2% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 8.1% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 2.97.

The urban population was divided into 23.4% minors, 9.4% 18–24 year olds, 29.3% 25–44 year olds, 24.4% 45–64 year olds and 13.5% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 women there were 95.4 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 92.2 men.

The median household income in Saraland was 38,318 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 43,471 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 35,431 compared to $ 22,787 for women. The per capita income in Saraland was $ 19,470. 9.0% of the population and 7.4% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 12.2% of minors and 8.9% of those aged 65 and over.

education

Saraland is dependent on the Mobile County's public school system, but in June 2006 it opted for a county-independent school system. This is under construction and is planned to be implemented by 2009. At the beginning of the 2008/2009 school year, the plan is to take over the Saraland Elementary and Nelson Adams Middle Schools and open a new high school the following year, which is estimated to be built at $ 19 million US dollars . Currently, students attend Satsuma High School in Satsuma or Vigor High School in Prichard .

There are several private schools in Saraland under church patronage.
