Scrabble World Championship

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Scrabble World Championship ( English World Scrabble Championship ) is the world's most prestigious tournament for Scrabble in English. It has been held every two years since 1991, and has been called the Scrabble Champions Tournament since 2013 . The current world champion is David Eldar , who won the title at the 2017 World Cup in Nottingham .

The number of participants has grown steadily since the beginning. While only 48 players took part in 1991, there were 108 in 2009. Each participating country is allowed to have a certain number of players, which is then determined by the national associations.

The dictionary used is colloquially known as SOWPODS, which is used in the majority of countries where Scrabble is played.

On May 17, 2013, the games company Mattel announced that the world championship will be renamed the Scrabble Champions Tournament and will take place in Prague from December 3 to 8, 2013 as part of the Mind Sports Festival .
