Gameplay

Scum is a survival horror game with an open world , which of zombies is infested and other animals, and in the multiplayer mode is played. The gameplay takes place on a Mediterranean- inspired island with over 144 square kilometers, which is supposed to represent inmates in a survival television show. Up to 64 players can play on one server (100 on rented private servers). The aim is to survive as long as possible and leave the island by obtaining the necessary resources. The player starts with the creation of his character.

The player gets points by participating in various events or simply by surviving in a hostile environment. These points allow the player to be retrieved in the event of death and can be used as currency for buying or trading in various safe zones.

Players can build on existing structures to secure positions or store required items. To do this, they can process the collected raw materials in a crafting system. The player has the four main characteristics: strength, dexterity, constitution and intelligence, which depend on the style of play. It tries to simulate the human body by recording calories, vitamins, health and other values ​​of the character and the player gets a heart attack , for example , if he eats too much. Players can choose to ignore these elements of the game or use them to improve the character's performance (speed, endurance, weight, etc.). Which is also digestive simulated. For example, if a character has all of their teeth knocked out, they must find a way to liquefy food in order to digest it. By defecation and urination physical evidence is left for activities on the island that could be used to track another player. In combat, therefore, in addition to the game's skill, the equipment and health and body structure of the character play a decisive role. You can play in the third-person perspective and in the first -person perspective .

Scum was first announced in August 2016. The game was prematurely released in the Early Access version on August 29, 2018 and is expected to be released in full in 2019. The game uses the Unreal Engine 4 . It is developed by the Croatian studio Gamepires, produced by Croteam and marketed by Devolver Digital .

The game was named one of the best indie games from PAX East 2018 by Game Informer . It is compared to other genre representatives such as DayZ and Rust due to its survival aspects , which in contrast places more emphasis on the detailed body realism.

When the developers introduced Nazi symbols into the game to increase prisoner and gang realism, they came under fire and decided to defuse them. The game was also criticized for a suicide function, which is supposed to contribute to realism, but can be seen as a danger for a Werther effect . The possibility of cannibalism and processing of human raw materials and too precise or exaggerated depiction of the human body also caused a stir .

The game sold over 250,000 copies in the first 24 hours of Early Access and over 700,000 copies in the first week. In the third week, the game sold over a million copies.
