Sebastian Steiger

Sebastian Steiger (born October 14, 1918 in Oltingen ; † July 2012 in Basel ) was a Swiss teacher and refugee shelfer.

Life

Sebastian Steiger grew up with four siblings as the son of the reformed pastor Walter Steiger in Oltingen, where he attended primary school. After attending secondary school in Binningen , he completed the four-year teachers' seminar in Schiers , which he completed with a teaching certificate. From 1940 to 1943 he taught as a deputy and studied one semester at the curative education seminar in Zurich.

From 1943 to 1945 he taught primarily Jewish refugee children in the colony of Château de la Hille in occupied southern France on behalf of the Children's Aid of the Swiss Red Cross .

After his return to Switzerland, he completed his studies with a diploma from the curative education seminar in Zurich and became a primary school teacher in Arlesheim . In 1947 he was appointed to the girls' primary school in Basel. In 1982 he retired and wrote a book about his experiences at La Hille Castle.

From 1958 to 1990 he held Jewish Child's Day every May , a day of remembrance for the one and a half million children who were murdered during the Nazi era. He was on the board of the Christian-Jewish Working Group and the Switzerland-Israel Society as well as on the Committee of Friends of the Swiss Children's Village Kiriat Yearim in Jerusalem . In 1985 he took part in the gathering of all the former children of La Hille Castle in Kibbutz Lehavot HaBashan in Israel who were somehow still reachable.

He married in 1956 and had three children.
