Sebastian Weygandt , also Weygand , (* 1760 in Bruchsal , † 1836 in Herleshausen ) was a German artist and painter who mainly dealt with portraiture .

biography

In the early years, Weygandt stayed in Augsburg and Italy , among other places , where he trained in art. Among other things, he was the royal Hohenlohe court painter in Breslau . During this time he taught the painter Julie Mihes . In 1807 he was appointed court painter in Kassel . However, he lost this position again around 1813 when the Napoleonic Kingdom of Westphalia dissolved. Nevertheless he stayed in Kassel around 1818, because of his art and his character he was generally regarded as respected. There he taught at the art academy , one of his students was Johann Wilhelm Nahl . He later made a portrait of his teacher himself. Weygandt's well-known works include portraits of Jérôme Bonaparte and his wife Katharine von Württemberg at the time of the Kingdom of Westphalia. With the painters August von der Embde , Ludwig Hummel , Andreas Range and Ludwig Sigismund Ruhl from 1818 to 1819 he also worked on a series of 22 life-size portraits of Hessian landgraves, which were intended for the electoral ancestral gallery. In 1837 they were installed on the wall panels of the central domed hall of Wilhelmshöhe Palace . However , the works of art were destroyed in World War II. In 1836 he died in Herleshausen, a community near Kassel.
