The six- banded angelfish ( Pomacanthus sexstriatus , syn .: Euxiphipops striatus ) lives in the central Indo-Pacific around Malaysia , Indonesia , the Philippines and New Guinea . To the north it is found across Taiwan to the Ryūkyū Islands , south to the coast of Western Australia, the Great Barrier Reef , the Solomon Islands and New Caledonia . It is the most common angelfish in New Guinea and Australia. The fish usually live in pairs in large areas of around 1000 m², at Green Island in the Great Barrier Reef there is a very high population density of 20 pairs per 1000 m². Adult animals prefer coral-rich, steep outer reef slopes , juvenile fish live hidden in shallow inner reefs.

The fish feed on sponges and bottom-dwelling invertebrates and occasionally on algae. Six-band angelfish hybridize with the blue-headed angelfish . A six-band angelfish kept in the aquarium lived to be 25 years old.

features

Six-band angelfish are brown in color, the head is very dark, the body light with six dark brown horizontal stripes. A white transverse band stretches across the gill cover . A pattern of blue dots can be seen on the flanks and on the unpaired fins. Six-band angelfish are usually 30, at most 46 centimeters long.

Fin formula : Dorsal XIII – XIV / 18–23, Anale III / 18–19

The fry, like many angelfish cubs, have a pattern of white and light blue horizontal stripes on a dark blue background and are similar to those of the blue-headed angelfish. The soft-nosed parts of the dorsal and anal fin are higher in young six-band angelfish. With a length of 8 to 15 centimeters, the adult color develops.
