Secret Moments is a film by the Swiss filmmaker Steff Gruber .

content

Almost 15 years after shooting his film Secret Moments, the filmmaker Steff Gruber reflects on his plans and failure at the time. During his multiple trips to Holland in the early 1990s , Gruber sought to uncover the secret of eroticism. He follows all traces and meets u. a. on Henrikus T., the largest porn producer in Europe at the time, whom he asks questions as well as consumers, erotic models and people from Amsterdam's erotic nightlife . This is linked to the search for the main actress in the film. To find them, the filmmaker is organizing a large public casting in Amsterdam. But when Gruber wanted to start filming a year later, his favorite was nowhere to be found. So he decides on another actress, who turns out to be the wrong cast. In the end, the filmmaker has neither found his ideal cast nor deciphered the secret of eroticism. But he did not fail completely when at the end of the film, for which he did not want to accept any taboos , he came to the conclusion that taboos are just necessary. Because, he agrees with Georges Bataille , the erotic takes place in secret.

background

Between 1991 and 1994 Steff Gruber shot his film in Holland on the subject of pornography and eroticism. But when the topic became omnipresent through the mass media, he saw his original idea as outdated and abandoned the film project. It wasn't until 2005 that he started finishing the film. The search for a valid form for the heterogeneous material turned into a reflection on his film project at the time about pornography - and at the same time a search for the reasons for its failure.

criticism

“The result is a solitaire from a film. The obsessive reader Gruber supplements the recordings from 1991 and 1992 with literary quotes (...), excerpts from porn and his comments from today's perspective on the pictures from back then. The search for a valid form for the heterogeneous material becomes a reflection on his cinematic reflection on pornography at the time - and at the same time a search for the reasons for his failure, which haunted him for many years.

At the same time, 'Secret Moments' is a journey through time. A trip back to Amsterdam in the nineties, to long-haired porn producers and legendary magazines ('Seventeen'), to women who gloss over their jobs and consumers who talk about their secret passions. A journey back to the work of a filmmaker who has almost been forgotten, although he once polarized the audience with his radically personal works - his opponents accused him of narcissism. Today, as documentaries are becoming more and more conventional in form and content, 'Secret Moments' looks like a boulder. "
