An inland lake island (also called a lake island ) is an island lying in a still water ( lake , reservoir, etc.) . Together with the river islands , the sea islands form the group of inland islands .

geology

Natural inland lake islands are created by

  • glacial reshaping of hard rock. If this creates inland lakes, inland lake islands are created in them by archipelagos .
  • Deposits of sediment in the lake bed or were created by alluvial sand or gravel.
  • Impact events.

For an inland lake island to form, the lake must have a suitable water level so that the islands are separated from the surrounding mainland, but are not yet completely flooded themselves. In lakes with changing water levels, inland islands can therefore disappear and reappear / emerge.

However, some of the lake islands, mainly used for bathing, are only artificial mini-islands created by humans.

Examples

A nationally known (natural) lake island is Mainau Island (45 hectares) in Lake Constance . The Bled Island ( Blejski otok ) in Lake Bled with a famous St. Mary's Church is the only island in Slovenia (0.8 ha area).

The world's largest inland lake islands are located in Canada and are the 2766 km² island of Manitoulin , which is located in Lake Huron , and the 2020 km² René Levasseur Island , which is located in the smaller Manicouagan reservoir .

The first was created by glacial over-shaping and is extremely flat, the second is the central mountain Mont Babel, an impact crater, located up to 600 m above the lake .
