The Marpingen glider airfield is a glider airfield of the AeroClub Saar. According to its own information, it is also the largest in Saarland. It is the seat of the “ Helmut Reichmann ” gliding performance center .
history
The airfield was opened in Marpingen in 1958 after the airfield in Ensheim , where the various clubs previously flew, should be expanded . The St. Wendel aviation club found a suitable site west of Marpingen. Over the years the airfield has been expanded. In order to meet the requirements as a state performance center , the airfield was expanded and in 1981 a widened runway and new hangars were put into operation. The state performance center was named after him in honor of the glider pilot Helmut Reichmann , who died in 1992 .
use
According to the company, there are currently around 44 sailors with or without engines and tow planes stationed in Marpingen. The approval of the place also includes hot air balloons . The place is used by 4 clubs: Akaflieg Saarbrücken, FSV Illtal, FSV Saarbrücken and FSV St. Wendel. The AeroClub Saar (State Air Sports Association of the Saarland ) operates its office here. Several championships take place in Marpingen every year, e.g. B. 2008 and 2011 the Open Southwest Championships in gliding, 1995 the International European Championships for women or 2013 the German Championship in gliding.
On the grounds of the airfield there is a small campsite, a club house of the FSV Illtal and a club bar in the operation of the FSV St. Wendel.
Bundeswehr base
For the 2015 season, the Bundeswehr's sports promotion group for gliding was relocated to Marpingen. The sports soldiers who are supposed to train for world and European championships at the airfield in Marpingen are stationed in Lebach .
Marpingen Airshow
Before the Marpingen Airshow took place for the first time in August 2011, there was an airfield festival every year, where the focus was more on looking at aircraft than on their flight performance. At the airshow, the concept was fundamentally revised and so the audience could admire demonstrations by pilots such as Matthias Dolderer or Philipp Steinbach with his self-developed SBach 300 .
