Athletic career

After playing with the junior team of SC Aufbau Magdeburg , Segger was used for the first time in the league on August 18, 1965 in the 5-0 defeat in the league game against BFC Dynamo. This season he played six more top division points as an attacking player and ended up relegated to the GDR league with the newly founded 1. FC Magdeburg . The Magdeburg team had previously played six games in the competition for the European Cup Winners' Cup , and Segger had been used in three games. In addition, Segger played on October 31, 1965, his only international selection game in the 2: 3 of the GDR youth national team against Poland. The Magdeburg team managed to get up again in 1967, and in the new league season 1967/68 Segger was in ten point games.

It was Segger's last season at 1. FC Magdeburg, because in the summer of 1968 he moved to the neighboring league club Hallescher FC Chemie. There he was used from the start in the league and immediately became a regular player in Halle with 25 out of 26 possible stakes. In the following seasons, Segger was always part of the regular squad and in the 1970/71 season achieved third place in the league, the best league result of his career.

At the beginning of the 1971/72 season, Segger made another change and went to the top club of the National People's Army FC Vorwärts, which had just moved from Berlin to Frankfurt (Oder) . Here, too, he played in the league from the first day of the match and was not only the most frequently used player with 26 games, but also the team's most successful goalscorer with seven goals. On May 1, 1976, he was in a final of the GDR soccer cup for the first time , but lost with FC Vorwärts to 1. FC Lok Leipzig 3-0. When FC Vorwärts had to relegate from the league at the end of the 1977/78 season, the 32-year-old Segger ended his football career. After that he had played 256 point games and scored 37 goals in his twelve league seasons. As captain, he had directed midfield of the FCV for several years.
