Segment class
The name segment class (English segment class ) is a class of Attic - black-figure bowls , also called segment bowls , which dates back to the last quarter of the 6th century BC. Is dated. More than 100 bowls of this class are known today.
In terms of shape, these are small bowls on a low foot, without the usual high stem foot. The base plates are flat and toroidal . The black outer sides are not decorated, but the inner sides show pictures that take up the entire interior of the bowls, usually limited at the bottom by a base line that cuts out a segment of a circle, followed by the name, which can, however, also be omitted.
The subjects of the pictures belong predominantly to the Dionysian realm. Apart from the Panathenaic price amphoras , some of the last large-format pictures in black-figure style are shown here. The artistic quality of the representations is modest and ranges from reasonably good to bad, so John D. Beazley did not make any attributions to individual painters. After the segment class, all bowls of appreciable quality are made in the red-figure style.
