Segundo Mesías Navarrete Navarrete (born May 21, 1985 in San Gabriel , Carchi Province ) is an Ecuadorian cyclist .
Athletic career
Segundo Navarrete is the son of Ecuadorian farmers and went to Quito with his brother, where he worked as a bus conductor for the minibus that his brother, a former amateur cyclist, was driving. A foundation gave him the opportunity to train as a cyclist. He competed in his first national races at the age of 15. He achieved his first successes at national youth championships. In 2003 he won the Pan-American Youth Championships in the Madison discipline together with Byron Guamá .
In addition to road racing, he is also active in rail sports. Among other things, he represented his country together with Jorge Gallegos , Byron Guama and David Tapia in the team pursuit at the South American Games in Argentina in 2006. Together with Guama and Gallegos, he also formed the Ecuadorian team at the 2007 Pan American Games in Brazil, where he competed in Madison, team pursuit and road racing.
In 2006 Navarrete won two parts of the Vuelta a Ecuador . In the following year, this tour of his home country was part of the UCI Americas Tour 2007 , so that his further stage win this year was his first international elite success. At the 2009 event, he came in second overall on the Tour of Ecuador. On an international level, he also won three stages of the Vuelta a Bolivia in 2010 and 2011 , a stage of the Vuelta a la Independencia Nacional in 2012 and a stage of the Vuelta a Guatemala in 2013, and the bronze medal in the road race of the Pan American Championships in 2013 . At national level he was time trial champion in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2016 and runner-up in road racing in 2014.
