Selim Idriss ( Arabic سلیم ادریس Salīm Idrīs , * 1957 in al-Mubarakiya near Homs ) is a former Syrian brigadier general. From December 2012 to February 2014 he was the so-called chief of staff of the opposition Free Syrian Army (FSA), although the position in Syria itself does not represent a de facto command. Since 2016 he has been the commander of the Syrian National Army .

Life

As part of the military cooperation between Syria and the GDR , Idriss studied electrical engineering in Dresden from 1984 . He received his doctorate in 1990 at the University of Transport, on the subject of theoretical (computer-aided) and experimental investigation of problems relating to the optimal dimensioning of RF transistor power amplifiers . After returning to Syria, he became a professor at the Aleppo Military Academy and later a general in the regular Syrian Army . In July 2012 he deserted to the Free Syrian Army during the Syrian Civil War . In December of the same year he became chief of staff of the FSA.

On March 8, 2013, Idriss traveled to Brussels to solicit support for the FSA in front of the European Parliament . He assured Ghassan Hitto , who was elected on March 18, 2013 by the opposition Syrian National Coalition as the first Prime Minister of the “liberated areas” of Syria, his support. He also advocates a possible government cabinet of the National Coalition.

In July 2013, in an interview with the broadcaster al-Arabiya , he warned the West not to support the Islamic State and the Nusra Front among the rebel groups , which, in contrast to other groups, worked with the Syrian secret service, the Kurds tried in Engaging in battles with other rebels and also avoiding any direct confrontation with the Syrian army. In return, they were allowed to control the oil fields in Deir ez-Zor and from there supplied the areas of the army with oil, which would generate monthly income of 150 million Syrian liras.

In December 2013, the Idriss headquarters near the Bab al-Hawa border crossing was stormed by militiamen from the Islamic Front . Idriss then fled to the Qatari capital Doha . FSA spokesman Khaled Saleh denied the US information and confirmed other reports that there were negotiations with the Islamic Front. Meanwhile, the headquarters was attacked by ISIL fighters .

On February 16, 2014, Idriss was replaced as commander in chief and replaced by Colonel Abdelilah Bashir . The move was justified with an ineffective leadership in the last few months.
