Selma von Lengefeld

Selma von Lengefeld (born July 8, 1863 in Pyritz , † February 21, 1934 in Weimar ) was a German academic and women's rights activist .

life and work

After the teacher examination for middle and higher girls' schools, which she passed in Wiesbaden in 1882 , Selma von Lengefeld went to England. She holds a Lady Literate in Arts degree from the University of St Andrews . From 1895 to 1899 she studied history , philology and philosophy at the University of Zurich . In 1900 she received her doctorate here with a dissertation on Domenico Silvio Passionei supervised by Wilhelm Oechsli .

At first she worked at the Prussian State Archives in Wiesbaden , but in 1901 she moved to Weimar, where she lived as a freelance scholar, researcher and writer. She was denied employment at the Goethe and Schiller Archives due to her gender.

Selma Lengenfeld was chairman of the association "Women's education Women's studies" and sat 1922-1926 for the German Democratic Party in the city council of Weimar.
