Wilhelm Oechsli

Wilhelm Oechsli (born October 6, 1851 in Riesbach (now Zurich ), † April 26, 1919 in Weggis ) was a Swiss historian .

Life

Oechsli studied first theology , then history at the universities of Berlin and Zurich , among others with Theodor Mommsen . In 1874 he completed his studies with a doctorate and in 1876 became a teacher at the canton school in Winterthur. In 1887 he took up the newly created professorship for Swiss history at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and from 1893 also worked at the University of Zurich. As a historian, Oechsli advocated studying sources and questioning traditional myths and legendsa. His main works are the standard work of the time on the origins of the Swiss Confederation and a two-volume history of Switzerland in the 19th century, written very close to the sources.

Wilhelm Oechsli's estate can be found in the Zurich Central Library . He was buried in the Fluntern cemetery . His tomb was lifted.
