SMIC ( Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation ) is a Chinese semiconductor manufacturer that was founded in 2000 with the support of the Chinese government to create the possibility of producing modern semiconductors in their own country.
Since 2004, SMIC has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange (symbol SMI) and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (No. 0981); allegedly the Chinese state continues to have decisive influence.
As a foundry, the company produces ICs with structure widths from 0.35 micrometers to 45 nanometers (the latter under license from IBM ) for other companies without their own production capacities ( fabless ). SMIC is the fifth largest wafer supplier with sales of $ 2.229 billion and a market share of 4.6% (as of 2015).
Customers for DDR-SDRAM are e.g. B. Elpida Memory and earlier Qimonda . In addition, solar cells are also part of the product range.
The headquarters and fabs that can manufacture 200mm and 300mm wafers are located in Shanghai . In Beijing features its own 300-mm Fab and a majority-owned SMIC 300-mm fab. Additional 200mm fabs are located in Tianjin and Shenzhen . A 200mm fab was taken over in 2016 by Specialty Foundry LFoundry Srl in Avezzano (Italy), a subsidiary of LFoundry , to 70%.
Marketing and customer service offices are located in the United States, Japan, and Italy.
