Semnan ( Persian سمنان) is the capital of the Iranian province of Semnan . It has 144,691 inhabitants.
Geographical location
The city is located on the northern edge of the province, about 220 km east of Tehran and 120 km south of the Caspian Sea at an altitude of 1138 meters above sea level on the southern edge of the Elburs Mountains .
In the west of the city is the originally independent Maleh district, which is inhabited by the Malezh. Maleh consists of the parts Kuery (Kodivar), Kushmaqaan and Zavaqaan.
Economy and Transport
The city is a regional trading center for grain and cotton . A historically important branch of industry is textile and carpet production. Today, automobile and bicycle production also play an important role. Semnan is a traditional base on the trade routes between Tehran, 220 km away, and Mashhad, 685 km away . The city is also on the Garmsar – Mashhad railway line , the direct rail link between Tehran and Mashhad.
Attractions
The Friday Mosque is of art historical importance , the first building of which was a pillared hall, which probably originated from the early Islamic period. A minaret , an underground room ( Schabestan ) and a two-storey part of the building are dated to the 11th century . During the Timurid era in the 15th century, the tall Ivan , visible from afar, was added.

Semnan is the location of the University of Semnan , the Semnan Medical University, the Islamic Azad University Semnan and other universities.
