Localization of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany

The transmitter Witzhelden was a basic network transmitter (transmitter Düsseldorf) for television of the German radio tower . It was located northwest of the village of Witzhelden . A 202.5 meter high guyed tubular steel mast with a diameter of 1.80 meters was used as the antenna carrier .

history

Construction began on April 4, 1960; the topping-out ceremony was celebrated on December 22, 1960. It was built by Hein, Lehmann and Co. ( Düsseldorf ), then part of the Stumm Group . On June 1, 1961 the broadcast of the second program ARD 2 (from April 1, 1963: ZDF ) began, and on October 25, 1963 the regional program of West German Broadcasting was added. With the introduction of private television, RTL Television was broadcast from April 1989 and VOX from January 1993 until all analogue TV channels were switched off from this location in 2005. On April 7, 2006, the 16-meter-high GRP cylinder with the analog TV antennas , which was placed on the mast in 1981, was dismantled with the help of a Russian transport helicopter. This reduced the height of the mast from 220 to 202.5 meters.

In 2007 the German radio tower tried to sell the mast, but failed. The mast was renovated a year later.

Since the DAB broadcasts were relocated to the Rheinturm , the Witzhelden station has been shut down and was shut down on November 7, 2017 at 1:32 p.m. (CET).
