Senecio formosoides is a representative of the ragweeds ( Senecio ) that occurs only in northern South America.

Senecio formosoides is an herbaceous plant that reaches a height of 40 cm at flowering time. It has a basal leaf rosette from which the purple or green stem arises, which is not branched. The leaves are sessile. The leaves of the rosette are six to eight inches long and 0.6 to 0.8 inches wide, lanceolate. Sometimes the underside is two-colored with purple, bald spots. The leaf base is wedge-shaped, the leaf margin is curled, wavy and serrated, the leaf tip is pointed, the leaf veins are pinnate with a distinct central rib. In the corners of the secondary nerves, the leaves are purple. The stem leaves are 2.2 to 4 inches long and 0.4 to 1 inches wide, lanceolate, balding. The base of the leaf is heart-shaped, encompassing the stem, the leaf edge is rolled up and serrated with glands. The end of the leaf is pointed, the veins inconspicuous.

The inflorescence is a terminal cyme . The flower heads are round. The bracts are lanceolate, purple, their midrib is hairy. The involucrum is 1.2 to 1.5 inches long, dark purple to purple and hairy. The involucral leaves are 1 to 1.5 centimeters long and 0.4 centimeters wide, oblanzeolate to lanzeolate. The edge is dry-skinned and ciliate. The tip is pointed with a tuft of hair. The achenes are 3.6 millimeters long and hairy. The pappus is 8.8 to 9.6 millimeters long.

The species occurs in Colombia , Venezuela and Ecuador , mainly on well-drained soils.
