Senmaya ( Japanese 千 厩 町 , Semmaya-chō or Senmaya-chō ) was a district city ( chō ) in the district of Higashiiwai , Iwate Prefecture , Japan . The name means “a thousand stables”, but nowadays horses are no longer kept.
history
On September 20, 2005 Senmaya was incorporated together with the cities of Daitō and Higashiyama and the villages of Kawasaki and Murone in the district of Higashiiwai, and the city of Hanaizumi in the district of Nishiiwai in the independent city of Ichinoseki .
As of 2003, the city had 13,151 inhabitants and a population density of 146.38 people per km². The total area was 89.84 km².
Attractions
The most famous sight is the Meotoiwa of the Shinto shrine Yae-jinja ( 彌 榮 神社 ), where people pray for fertility and the blessings of children. The Meotoiwa is a stone formation that resembles a copulating penis, there is also a large gold-plated penis statue and other phallic objects.
In the Daikō-ji ( 大 光寺 ) Buddhist temple with adjoining cemetery in the surrounding hills there is a wooden statue of Yakushi Nyorai from the Heian period , which was protected by the prefecture.

The main highways are national road 284 to Rikuzentakata or Ichinoseki and national road 456 to Morioka or Kesennuma . Senmaya has three taxi companies and bus services to Ichinoseki and Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture . Senmaya is connected to the rail network with the JR East Ōfunato Line , which linked it to the west with Ichinoseki in the interior and to the east with Kesennuma on the coast. The last train leaves at 8:30 p.m.
education
Senmaya has several kindergartens, five primary schools (grades 1-6), a middle school (grades 7-9) and a prefectural high school (grades 10-12), the Iwate-kenritsu Senmaya Kōkō with about 600 students. High school students choose to specialize in agriculture or handicrafts, and the school has a school garden with vegetable and rice fields.
Shopping
In the shopping street in the center of Senmaya there are shops for daily needs, in addition the S * PIA shopping center offers a small department store, supermarket, bakery, beverage shop, shoe shop, hairdresser, dry cleaning, restaurants and a 100-yen shop. Next door is the Sunday Home Center with a hardware store and agricultural supplies.
Senmaya also has three supermarkets, several drugstores, a bookstore, a video store, a 100-yen store and several gas stations as well as general stores open all day.
Apart from a few restaurants and bars, there are no noteworthy leisure activities in the evening.
