Josef "Sepp" Schellhorn (born May 12, 1967 in Schwarzach im Pongau , Land Salzburg ) is an Austrian entrepreneur , restaurateur and politician ( NEOS , formerly ÖVP ). Since 2014 he has been a member of the Austrian National Council . He is the state chairman of NEOS Salzburg and has been the deputy national chairman of NEOS since June 23, 2018.

Education and professional career

Sepp Schellhorn grew up in a family of restaurateurs in Goldegg im Pongau . After attending hotel management school, completing military service and international engagements in the United States, France and Italy, he took over his parents' business “Der Seehof” in Goldegg am See in 1996. As a restaurateur, Sepp Schellhorn was actively involved in representing the interests of hoteliers, where he was President of the Austrian Hotel Association from 2003 to 2013 .

As a gastronomic entrepreneur, he runs the restaurants M32 in the Museum der Moderne Salzburg on Mönchsberg , Spoon also in the city of Salzburg, the main business Seehof in Goldegg and the Angertal 1180 in Bad Hofgastein as well as the Rossalm in the ski area of ​​Bad Gastein and two other restaurants in the ski area of Sportgastein .

Political activity

Schellhorn was initially politically active for the Wirtschaftsbund and the ÖVP at community level before he switched to the newly founded NEOS - Das Neue Österreich party in the run-up to the 2013 National Council elections , where he became state spokesman for the Salzburg Neos and ran for fourth place on the federal list. In the National Council election Schellhorn was initially unable to secure a seat in the National Council, which is why he briefly considered ending his political involvement with NEOS after the municipal council election in March 2014 .

With Angelika Mlinar's departure from the Austrian National Council as a result of her move to the European Parliament, Schellhorn succeeded on July 1, 2014, on her vacant mandate in the National Council and became economic spokesman for the NEOS Parliamentary Club.

On July 7, 2017, it was announced that the NEOS party would compete in the early National Council election in October 2017 as an electoral alliance under the name NEOS - Das Neue Österreich together with Irmgard Griss , Citizens for Freedom and Responsibility (short name NEOS). In this election, Sepp Schellhorn ran again for a member of the National Council on the federal list of the electoral alliance and was ultimately re-elected. In the 26th legislative period, Schellhorn is now the speaker of the NEOS Parliamentary Club for the areas of finance, economy & industry, tourism, art & culture and energy.

In the Salzburg state election on April 22, 2018 , Sepp Schellhorn, as NEOS state spokesman , leads the party's candidacy there as the top candidate.

In the first parliamentary year after the 2017 National Council election, Schellhorn was the member who was present in the fewest votes in the National Council (only 23.6 percent).

Cultural engagement

Sepp Schellhorn is also involved in the cultural sector, especially in the field of literature. With the Sepp Schellhorn Scholarship , some artist in residence scholarships have been awarded to authors and artists since 2011 . Schellhorn is also a great admirer of Thomas Bernhard and in 2012 launched the annual, multi-day event “ Disturbances - A Festival for Thomas Bernhard ”. In May 2017, Schellhorn also took over as chairman of the National Council's cultural committee after the departure of NEOS MP Niko Alm . In 2017, Sepp Schellhorn, together with his mother and son, published the generational cookbook, which lists recipes from Alpine cuisine.

Private life

Sepp Schellhorn is married and has three children. Sepp Schellhorn's brother, the business journalist Franz Schellhorn , heads the liberal think tank Agenda Austria .
