Sergei Ivanovich Tomkeieff

Sergei Ivanovich Tomkeieff ( Russian Сергей Иванович Томкеев ; born September 26 ^{. Jul} / 8. October 1892 ^greg. In Vilnius ; † 27. October 1968 in Newcastle upon Tyne ) was a British geologist and Petrologe Russian descent.

Life

Tomkeieff was born the son of a Russian officer stationed in Vilnius and later a general. After attending school in Tbilisi , he studied from 1909 at the Polytechnic Institute in St. Petersburg . Among his teachers and colleagues were Franz Loewinson-Lessing and Alexander Evgenjewitsch Fersman . He served in the Red Cross during the First World War , was wounded and came to England on a shopping mission, where he stayed after the October Revolution. He initially worked at the University of Manchester , moved to Newcastle in 1920, where he taught mineralogy at the university there since 1948 and was appointed professor of petrology in 1957. He published numerous papers on mineralogy, geology, petrology and geochemistry. He also translated essays and books from Russian into English and closely followed the development of his fields of expertise in the Soviet Union.

In 1948 Tomkeieff was elected a member ( Fellow ) of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . In 1966 he was awarded the Lyell Medal of the Geological Society of London .
