Sergei Ivanovich Adjan ( Russian Сергей Иванович Адян , English Sergei Adian (Adyan) ; Armenian Սերգեյ Իվանովիչ Ադյան ; born January 1, 1931 in Quşçu , Daşkəsən district , Azerbaijani SSR , Soviet Union ; † May 5, 2020 in Moscow , Russia. ) Was a Soviet and Russian mathematician who studied group theory and mathematical logic .

Adjan was the son of a carpenter of Armenian nationality who died on the front in 1941. His mathematical talent was noticed early in school and he studied first in Yerevan , then at the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute with Pyotr Sergeyevich Novikov , where he received his doctorate in 1955. In the dissertation he showed the undecidability of a large class of problems of group theory (set of Adian and Rabin ), for example, the isomorphism to a given group G. 1956 received it for the price of Moscow Mathematical Society and in 1963 the Chebyshev Prize of the Academy of the Sciences of the USSR. In 1957 he went with Nowikow to the newly founded department for mathematical logic of the Steklow Institute (headed by Nowikow). It was there that he began working with Novikov on the Burnside problem of group theory, and they achieved significant partial results. In 1973 he took over the management of the Mathematical Logic Department at the Steklow Institute from Nowikow . He also taught at Lomonosov University .

He was a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .
