Sergey Shoygu ( Russian Сергей Кужугетович Шойгу , Tuvan Сергей Күжүгет оглу Шойгу * 21st May 1955 in Chadan , Tuwinisches Autonomous Region , RSFSR , Soviet Union ) is a Russian politician and army general . From 1994 to 2012 he was Minister of Civil Protection of the Russian Federation. From May 11th to November 6th 2012 he was governor of Moscow Oblast . On November 6, 2012, he became Minister of Defense .

Life

Shoigu, son of a Tuvan father and a Russian mother, is a civil engineer by profession . After completing his studies in 1977 he first worked in this profession, from 1988 to 1989 he was a functionary of the CPSU in Abakan , from 1989 to 1990 inspector of the CPSU district committee of Krasnoyarsk . In 1990 he was appointed to Moscow , where he became deputy head of the State Committee for Architecture and Construction of the Russian Federation. In May 1991 he became the head of the Civil Protection Corps, which was renamed State Emergency Situations Committee in November of that year.

Shoigu became a member of the National Security Council on January 31, 1994, and Minister for Civil Defense, Emergency Situations and Consequences of Natural Disasters on November 20 of the same year . In this function he has gained a high level of popularity, thanks to his organizational skills, but also through high-profile appearances. In 1999, he received the highest national award for his work Hero of Russia and became the Colonel-General conveyed.

In September 1999 he was one of the founders of the Jedinstvo (Unity) party, which won 23% of the vote in the 1999 parliamentary elections and supported the election of Vladimir Putin as president. In December 2001 it was absorbed into the new United Russia party .

In May 2003, Shoigu was promoted to army general.

On April 4, 2012, Shoigu was proposed by the United Russia party for the post of governor in Moscow Oblast . On April 5, 2012, he was unanimously elected as the new governor of the Duma of Moscow Oblast. Shoigu officially took up this position on May 11, 2012, replacing his predecessor, Boris Gromow , who no longer took up his position for reasons of age. This also ended his term as civil protection minister.

On November 6, 2012, Shoigu was appointed Russian Defense Minister after President Vladimir Putin dismissed former Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov over a real estate scandal.

In 2016 he founded the youth organization Junarmija (youth army ).

Private

Schoigu is married and has two daughters (* 1977 and 1991).

Others

In 2003 Shoigu spoke out in favor of withdrawing Russian citizenship from those who did not take part in the elections three times in a row. Civil rights activists then demanded his replacement as Minister for Civil Protection.
