Sergio Balanzino

Sergio Silvio Balanzino (born June 20, 1934 in Bologna , † February 26, 2018 in Rome ) was an Italian university professor , diplomat and NATO Deputy Secretary General.

Balanzino studied in Rome law and then worked at the Italian Foreign Ministry as a diplomat, especially in the economic field. In the 1960s he entered the service of NATO. In the years that followed, he also repeatedly worked for the Italian Foreign Ministry, most recently as Ambassador to Canada . In 1994, after the death of NATO Secretary General Manfred Wörner, he temporarily took over his official duties, and again after the resignation of Willy Claes . Balanzino remained from 1994 to 2001 as Deputy Secretary General at NATO.

Sergio Balanzino worked as a professor at the Loyola University Chicago Rome Center in Rome .
