The Serre Mountains are a mountain range in the southern Italian region of Calabria . The slopes of the mountain formation are characterized by dense tree growth. The name of the mountains possibly comes from the Hebrew ( Ser for mountains) or from the regional dialect ( Serra for saw-shaped).

The mountains are encompassed by the Parco Naturale Regionale delle Serre (in German: Serre Regional Nature Park ) established in 1990 .

geography

The Marmarico waterfall

The mountain range stretches from the Limina pass of Aspromonte in the south to the Istmo di Marcellinara in the north, where it borders on the Sila Mountains . The Serre Mountains are located in the provinces of Vibo Valentia and Catanzaro and the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria .

Characteristics

The Serre Mountains consist of two long, parallel mountain chains with elevations of different heights, which in their morphology are reminiscent of the teeth of a saw . The highest peak is that of Monte Pecoraro at 1423 meters.

From a geological point of view, the mountains belong to the so-called Alpi calabresi with the main rock types granite , porphyry , quartz diorite and serpentinite . Various clay minerals occur in the eastern areas . In contrast, the structure of Monte Mammicomito is based on limestone (similar to the Dolomites ), with grottos, sinkholes and ponors . The latter limestone formations occur within the Serre Mountains only on Monte Mammicomito. The Badlands are a special landscape of the Serre .

The territory of the Serre is largely covered by deciduous and coniferous forests, the development of which is favored by the numerous smaller watercourses. The silver fir and oak dominate the valleys, and beech trees are predominant from an altitude of 800 meters .

The fauna has been and is a victim of rampant poaching for some time . Nevertheless, the return of smaller packs of Italian wolves has been observed in recent years .
