Severin Grill

Severin Matthias Grill OCist. (* February 12, 1893 in Markt Piesting ; † May 28, 1975 in Heiligenkreuz ) was an Austrian Cistercian and theologian .

life and work

Matthias Grill was born as the son of winemakers Josef and Franziska Grill, attended grammar school in Wiener Neustadt from 1907 to 1914 , where he graduated from high school . He entered the novitiate of the Heiligenkreuz Abbey in 1914 and took the religious name Severin . He studied from 1915 to 1917 in Heiligenkreuz and was ordained a priest there on July 13, 1919 . From 1917 he studied at the University of Innsbruck . His doctorate as Dr. theol. concluded Grill with a work on the history of the order on December 12, 1921. In 1921 he taught at the grammar school in Wiener Neustadt until he was appointed professor for the Old Testament and oriental languages at the Institutum Theologicum in Heiligenkreuz in 1922 . He also headed the monastery library and was from 1940 to 1946 at the same time pastor of Sittendorf (Wienerwald community) .

Grill initially focused on the thunderstorm theophany in the Old Testament , and later on liturgical studies and Bible translations . After the Second Vatican Council , he published a number of popular writings on the contemporary understanding of the Holy Mass .

Grill died in Heiligenkreuz Abbey .
