Elmar Frey

Elmar Frey (born December 28, 1964 in Männedorf ) is a Swiss drummer and composer of modern jazz .

Live and act

Frey started playing drums at the age of 16. Between 1988 and 1992 he studied at the Swiss Jazz School with Billy Brooks , Joe Haider and Frank Sikora . He has been working as a professional musician since the early 1990s, initially in groups like True Blue or with Herbie Kopf . In 1998 he founded his Organ-x project with Roland von Flüe , Marcel Thomi and Roberto Bossard . He also composes and arranges for his own group, the Elmar Frey Sextet .

As a sideman he played in the bands of Vince Benedetti , Regula Schneider, Roberto Bossard, Jochen Baldes , Christoph Grab , Daniel Schenker , Stefan Schlegel , Hugo Helfenstein , Bruno Spoerri , Patrick Tompert, Alessandro d'Episcopo and others as well as with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra . Frey also performed with jazz greats such as Horace Parlan , Benny Golson , Greg Osby , George Gruntz , Franco Ambrosetti and Kurt Rosenwinkel . After 2000 he toured internationally with the New York Voices , with the Organ Trio by James Carter and with the Quartet by Mark Soskin . He can also be heard on albums by Peggy Chew, Mark Hauser and Chris Wiesendanger .
