Severin Leitner SJ (born March 29, 1945 in Pfunders , South Tyrol , Italy ; † June 7, 2015 in the Gran Sasso d'Italia ) was a South Tyrolean Jesuit .

Leitner was appointed at the end of 2011 by the Superior General of the Jesuit Order , Adolfo Nicolás , as his advisor and regional assistant for Central and Eastern Europe. He held this post until his accidental death.

Life

Severin Leitner grew up at Weissteinerhof with eleven siblings, he lost his father at an early age. After attending primary school in Pfunders, he attended the Vinzentinum in Brixen. In 1965 he entered the Jesuit order. After some time as prefect in the Aloisianum in Linz and studying theology, he was ordained a priest in 1974 and completed a doctorate in Innsbruck. After completing his studies, Leitner worked as a youth and student chaplain in Vienna and in 1981 took over the deputy management of the large youth center " Kennedy-Haus " in Sillgasse in Innsbruck . After some preparation in Rome, Severin Leitner was novice master from 1987 to 1997. From 1997 to 2001 Leitner worked as Regens in the international Canisianum seminary in Innsbruck. From 2001 to 2008 he was Provincial of the Austrian Province of the Society of Jesus and since 2005 has been Chairman of the Provincial Conference of the Jesuits in Central Europe. In 2009 Severin Leitner took up the post of Rector at the Jesuit College Innsbruck and continued this until 2012.

Leitner has been in Rome since 2012 to assist Adolfo Nicolás as a consultant, and was there as a regional assistant for Central and Eastern Europe (includes the provinces of Austria , the Czech Republic , Croatia , Germany , Switzerland , Hungary , Lithuania , Poland , Romania , Slovakia and Slovenia as well as the Russia region ).

Severin Leitner had an accident on June 7, 2015 on a mountain tour in the Gran Sasso massif.
