Seydou Keïta (photographer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Seydou Keïta (* 1923 in Bamako , French Sudan ; † November 21, 2001 in Paris , France ) was a Malian photography artist . Alongside Malick Sidibé, he is considered one of the most important photographers in Africa .

Life

Keïta first completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter with his father and uncle. His uncle gave him his first camera in 1935, a Kodak Brownie Flash . In 1948 he opened his own studio in Bamako-Coura; the focus was on commissioned portraits. In 1962, with the independence of Mali, he entered the civil service as an "official photographer". The first exhibition of his photographs took place in New York City in 1991 , initially classified as "unknown". Thanks to André Maguin's research , Keïta was identified as the author. As a result, his oeuvre was received internationally, at festivals, exhibitions and in publications, as well as in magazines and in book form.

He is best known for his portraits of people and families, which he took between 1940 and the early 1960s. Keïta was an autodidact. His pictures document Malian society and are internationally recognized as works of art.
