The Sgùrr nan Gillean is a 964 meter high mountain on the Scottish island of Skye . Its Gaelic name means top of the young men . Legend has it that all young men in this part of Skye had to climb the mountain by the age of 16 if they were to be considered man. It is part of the Black Cuillin mountain range and classified as Munro due to its height .

Geologically, the Sgùrr nan Gillean, like the entire Black Cuillin, consists of gabbro and basalt and has extremely rocky structures. It is located in the northern part of the Black Cuillin and is widely recognizable from the north due to its distinctive summit pyramid and a popular photo opportunity. The main summit is joined to the north by the gently sloping so-called Pinnacle Ridge , which consists of several consecutive rock peaks that drop in height. Another rocky ridge, the West Ridge , runs to the west from the summit and forms the transition to the neighboring Am Basteir . Another ridge runs to the south-east, and the most frequented ascent runs over it.

Due to its rocky structure, the Sgùrr nan Gillean is one of the more difficult mountains in Scotland, after the Sgùrr Dearg or the Inaccessible Pinnacle located on it, it is the most difficult Munro on Skye. Even the easiest ascent, the so-called tourist route, requires climbing and has exposed passages, especially in the last ascent to the summit. The starting point is Sligachan , about five kilometers north of the mountain. From there the path leads south, finally below the eastern flank of the Sgùrr nan Gillean in the Coire Rhiabhach up to the southeast ridge, from there to the summit. The ascent over the Pinnacle Ridge is not recommended without climbing equipment, the overcoming of the peaks requires abseiling in individual places , as well as the transition to the west to Am Basteir has abseiling points.
