The Sgùrr Dearg is a mountain on the Scottish island of Skye , off the Scottish mainland to the west. A special feature of the mountain is its summit, which consists on the one hand of the lower, but more easily accessible Sgùrr Dearg and on the other hand of the actual main summit of the Inaccessible Pinnacle . According to the shape of the mountain, the Sgùrr Dearg only "carries" the In- Pinnacle, called In- Pinnacle, because it only seems to sit on its south side. However, it is about ten meters higher than the Sgùrr Dearg, which is why it also forms the main peak of the entire mountain. This fact often leads to confusion in the literature when both the Sgùrr Dearg and the Inaccessible Pinnacle are mentioned as summits, although the same thing is meant.

Sgùrr Dearg

The Sgùrr Dearg is located in the small massif of the Black Cuillin Mountains on the Isle of Skye. It is located on the main ridge north of Sgùrr Mhic Choinnich and south of Sgùrr na Banachdich and is mainly made of gabbro - a very resistant rock. It is similar in shape and appearance to the other Cuillin Mountains, all of which are rugged, rocky and almost devoid of vegetation.

Inaccessible Pinnacle

The Inaccessible Pinnacle, almost always just called In-Pinn, forms the actual summit of Sgùrr Dearg. It is in front of its summit on the steep, southern flank. On the one hand, it is characterized by its special shape, as it seems to look like a huge razor blade made of stone placed on the mountain. On the other hand, it is generally considered to be the most difficult of all Scottish Munros and, on top of that, the only one that can only be climbed by climbing .

Ascent

The ascent of the Sgùrr Dearg is technically not overly demanding, but if you also want to conquer the Innaccesible Pinnacle, you should definitely have climbing skills and the necessary equipment.

There are basically two paths to the summit of Sgùrr Dearg, and thus to the foot of In-Pinn, both of which start in the small town of Glenbrittle on the bay of the same name. One leads through the Corie Lagan basin , the other through the somewhat smaller and less visited Coire na Banachdich . In both cases, the ascent from the car park at the campsite to the summit of Sgùrr Dearg takes around 2-3 hours.

The best way to climb the In-Pinn is to choose the path over the south ridge. To do this, descend from the summit of Sgùrr Dearg to the lower edge of In-Pinn and deposit everything that is not needed for climbing there. The ascent first leads a few meters on the west side, then only directly up the sharp south ridge of the In-Pinn. The ridge is not secured with bolts or the like, all safety devices ( clamping devices or clamping wedges ) must be attached and then removed again. Almost exactly in the middle of the ascent, a small ledge offers the opportunity to secure a stand , so that an ascent over two pitches is possible . At the summit, on the north side of the rock needle (as of May 2009), there is a deflection hook that enables direct abseiling (about 15 m) onto the south flank of Sgùrr Dearg.

Others

The first ascent of the Inaccessible Pinnacle was achieved in 1880 by the brothers Charles and Lawrence Pilkington, and in 1881 John MacKenzie achieved the second summit success barefoot. Sgùrr Mhic Choinnich , which is directly to the south, was later named after MacKenzie . In 2007 the film Seachd: The Inaccessible Pinnacle by the English director Simon Miller was released, in which the mountain plays a decisive role.
