Shad (2006)

Shadrach Kabango , better known as Shad or Shad K. , (* 1982 ) is a Canadian rapper from London , Ontario . He was born in Kenya in 1982 , but grew up in Ontario. He holds a bachelor's degree in business from Wilfrid Laurier University and is currently working on his master's degree in liberal arts from Simon Fraser University .

His third album TSOL was released on May 25, 2010 in Canada and on October 5, 2010 in the USA and is probably the most musically versatile that Shad has released to date. The album reached number 24 on the Canadian album charts and was nominated for the 2010 Polaris Music Prize. The first single from the album "Yaa I Get It" was released in April 2010.

His latest album Flying Colors was released in 2013.

Career

His first album When This Is Over (2005) was produced and financed by Shad himself, with the help of his win at 91.5 The Beat's Rhythm of the Future talent competition. Even then, Shad's lyrics dealt with many different facets of life. For example the song "I'll Never Understand", which is about the genocide in Rwanda and contains parts of poems by his mother, who comes from Rwanda.

In 2007 Shad was signed to Black Box Recordings . In the same year he released his second album The Old Prince under this label . The album received a nomination for the Juno Awards 2008 for Rap Recording of the Year , a nomination for the 2008 Polaris Music Prize and two nominations for the MuchMusic Video Awards. In 2009 he won the Indie Award in the Favorite Urban Artist category with the album .

His latest work TSOL followed in May 2010 . It is not known what the abbreviation stands for and it is also said that its management do not know what it means. During an interview with Exclaim! Shad replied to the question about the meaning of the name: "TSOL doesn't stand for any one thing. I just liked the sound of it. It represents the insufficiency of language to express feeling and ideas, which is why we have art. It can stand for a number of things: the struggle of love, truth shall overcome lies, 'lost' backward. It's representative of the ambiguity of life in a way. " So far the singles "Yaa I get It", "Rose Garden" and "We, Myself and I" have been released. The song "Rose Garden" stands out in particular, with a very nice Motown sample and support from Lisa Lobsinger . The video published for this is also on a very high artistic level. But also songs like "A Good Name", produced by Classified , in which Shad deals with the origin and meaning of his name and how this influenced his character, or the track "At The Same Time", which deals with situations that one could cry and laugh at the same time are evidence of Shad's musical and lyrical skills.

In September 2010, MTV News Canada announced that Shad was working with Dallas Green on a remix of one of his songs and an entirely new song to be released as a 12 "vinyl single. He is currently on tour (Born To Run Tour) through the USA together with the Canadian rapper k-os .

In October 2013 Shad released his fourth album "Flying Colors", on which besides k-os also other Canadian artists like Saukrates, Ian Kamau, the rapper Eternia and Lisa Lobsinger participate.
