history
In 1891 a post office was established by the first settlers on the site of the present location and part of the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad was built there. After 1894 the place was called "Shady Point", which was in the area of the Choctawindians . The timber industry, agriculture and mining developed in the region. From 1900 another railway line that transported coal was built. Their operation was stopped again in 1926, as the coal demand in the region declined.
In 1978 a mine opened nearby. However, when two workers died in the mine, it was closed again in 1980. In 1991, Applied Energy Services Corporation opened a coal-fired power plant that soon burned more than half of the coal mined in Oklahoma.
