Syed Saleem Shahzad

Syed Saleem Shahzad (born November 3, 1970 - May 31, 2011 ) was a Pakistani investigative journalist .

Shahzad was known for his good contacts with Islamist terror groups as well as the Pakistani secret service and the military. Among other things, he conducted interviews with Sirajuddin Haqqani from the Haqqani network and Mohammad Ilyas Kashmiri .

Most recently, Shahzad worked for Asia Times Online and an Italian news agency.

According to Human Rights Watch , shortly before his death, Shahzad claimed that he was being threatened and persecuted by Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Specifically, he named an admiral in the Pakistani Navy. His last work dealt with the infiltration of the Pakistani Navy by al-Qaida . In it, he stated that the attack on the Karachi naval base in 2011 was revenge for the arrest of several sympathetic naval officers.

Shahzad disappeared without a trace from Islamabad in May 2011 on his way to an evening television interview about his article . Two days later, his body, marked with traces of torture, was found in a canal near the town of Mandi Bahauddin in the Punjab , 150 kilometers to the southeast.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned his kidnapping and assassination, saying: "His coverage of terrorism and intelligence issues in Pakistan has highlighted the problems that extremism poses to Pakistan's stability."

Others

His murder occurred shortly after the death of Osama bin Laden . Since then, the relationship between the Pakistani government and the ISI has been discussed, as well as the extent to which Islamists have infiltrated Pakistani institutions.
