The Shandong Peninsula ( Chinese  山東 半島  /  山东 半岛 , Pinyin Shāndōng bàndǎo , German : East of the mountain, German spelling also Shantung Peninsula ) is a peninsula in the east of the Chinese province of Shandong east of the Jiaolai Valley (胶莱 谷地Jiaolai Gudi ), which is also known as the Jiaolai Plain ( Jiaolai Pingyuan胶莱 平原). It is one of the three large peninsulas of China and forms the border between the Gulf of Bohai or Bohai Sea ( Bo Hai ) and the Yellow Sea ( Huang Hai ). Opposite it is the Liaodong Peninsula . Both peninsulas are separated from each other by the Bohai Strait ( Bohai Haixie ). The hilly peninsula is rich in natural resources.

Major cities on the peninsula are Qingdao , Yantai, and Weihai .

language

In addition to standard Chinese, the dialect Jiaoliao-Mandarin is particularly widespread on the Shandong Peninsula .

history

During colonial times , parts of the Shandong Peninsula were under the rule of the German Empire . After the Treaty of Versailles , the so-called Shandong problem arose , as China formulated claims to this area which Great Britain and France had already promised the Japanese Empire . China was able to win the support of US President Wilson for the territorial claim and got the peninsula back in 1922 through the Washington Naval Conference .
