action
China, at the end of the Qing Dynasty . As a result of a devastating drought, the common people from the poor provinces of the country are pouring into the urban agglomerations. The two brothers Ma Wing Jing and Ma Tai Cheung make their way to Shanghai , an enclave leased by the British and the most important trading center of the time. In the new environment, they initially work as simple coolies until the gifted fighter Ma Wing Jing succeeds in gaining the attention of the honorable triad boss Tam See. Supported by the British occupiers, he fights against triad boss Yang Shuang for supremacy in the pulsating city.
The underworld size offers Wing Jing a job a little unexpectedly, but the headstrong newcomer initially declines. Nevertheless, the main character visits the thriving nightclub Tam Sees with his older brother, which is run by his seedy lover Yam Yeung-tien. Here the smart Wing Jing gets to know the attractive singer Kim Ling-Tze. The two fall in love. When Wing Jing managed, thanks to his fighting skills, to put down an attack by Tam See's adversary Yang Shuang - he later even thwarted an assassination attempt - he was given the opportunity to fight for his own territory as thanks for his services. He finally switched to the gangster compartment. At a different time, the cunning nightclub manager has her rival Kim Ling-Tze sent away in order to intrigue Wing Jing.
Wing Jing conquered the territories of triad boss Yang Shuang, who was supported by the corrupt police, within a very short time. At the height of power, blinded by the intriguing influence of Yam Yeung-tien, who in turn cooperates with Yang, the former day laborer changes. There is a break with his former mentor, triad boss Tam See; later with his own brother. Deprived of his loyal companion, Wing Jing is eventually betrayed by Yam Yeung-tien and seriously wounded. Meanwhile, an opaque plan is working. In a bloody scenario, the unscrupulous Yang Shuang gets rid of all gang bosses who are not sympathetic to him. Tam See is only injured. Yang Shuang becomes the undisputed ruler of the metropolis, supported by the police.
Meanwhile, the injured Wing Jing is being nursed back to health by his former lover Kim Ling-Tze. Your patient goes back to his old values and takes the side of the law again. With the help of Tam See, at the end of the film he confronts the villain and his entourage, as well as cooperating police officers in a final argument. Tam See and his lover Yam Yeung-tien are killed. Towards the end Wing Jing, his brother and Ling-Tze leave Shanghai in the presence of their uncle. After their departure, gang wars break out again.
