Shawn Elliott Santiago (born 1937 in Puerto Rico , † March 11, 2016 in New York City ) was a Puerto Rican actor and singer .

Life

Elliott began his career as a singer of calypso music. In 1965 he had a surprise hit with a novelty number from the 1940s, Shame and Scandal in the Family . In Europe, the song in the version of Elliott became a great success. In Germany it reached number 14, in the Netherlands number 3 and in Austria it was even a number 1 hit .

But it remained his only success, a second attempt in 1976 with a disco / soul album under the stage name Santiago was unsuccessful.

From 1968 he was a musical performer on Broadway on stage. Since the 1980s, he has also had film and television roles, including series appearances on the Bill Cosby Show , Miami Vice , Law & Order, and CSI: Miami .

Since 1990 he was married to actress Donna Murphy .

Shame and Scandal

Text and music: Huon Donaldson, Slim Henry Brown

The Trinidadian calypso singer Sir Lancelot popularized the song Shame and Scandal (In the Family) in Jacques Tourneur's 1943 horror film I Followed a Zombie . The song is about the son of the family wanting to marry a girl twice, but both times his father objects: Both girls are his sisters, the mother just doesn't know anything about it. The boy then confesses to his mother, who only says he should marry the girl, his father isn't his father at all, he just doesn't know that.

While the original version remained the most popular in English-speaking countries, the song was first made known on the European continent by Shawn Elliott. Other performers who recorded the song were Lord Melody, Lance Percival (1965 # 37 in UK), Peter Tosh, the Wailers, Johnny Chester, Trini Lopez and Elliot Sam. In 2005 the ska band Madness had a small international hit with the song.

There was a German version of the song by Harry and Ronny in 1965 under the title The Shame of Our Family , and another by the Swiss band Die Dorados as Our Little Fine Family (That's how it is) (Text: Kurt Feltz). At the same time the song was recorded in Bavarian, Gela and the Gentries sang from Die Schand 'and des G'red . A French version (Scandale dans la famille) was published in the same year by Dalida , of which there is also an Italian version called Un Grosso Scandalo , other French recordings are by Sacha Distel and Les Surfs from Morocco. In 2012 the Holstuonarmusigbigbandclub premiered a dialect interpretation of the song. Instead of Trinidad, the story takes place in the Bregenzerwald (Vorarlberg), so the title is accordingly: Shame im Wauld .
