Sheila Anne Rodwell OBE , née Harrison (born March 7, 1947 in St Albans - † June 16, 2009 ), known by her name from her first marriage, Sheila Bingham , was a British epidemiologist and nutritionist.

Life

Bingham was the daughter of a space engineer and attended Loughborough High School and then Queen Elizabeth College , which is now part of King's College London . There she completed her studies as a nutritionist and then worked in this profession from 1969 to 1974.

She then began a scientific career at the Medical Research Council (MRC) in Cambridge , where she investigated the relationship between certain dietary habits and chronic diseases. In the course of her studies, she established numerous new biomarkers , including for protein and sugar , that enable her to investigate the relationship between diet and disease risks. Among other things, she examined the effects of phytoestrogens , the connection between increased fat consumption and breast cancer, as well as the excessive consumption of red meat and colon cancer . Bingham was one of the initiators of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition, known as the EPIC study .

Bingham, who has co-authored over 450 publications, has held honorary professorships at Cambridge and the University of Ulster , and was a Life Fellow at Clare College . She was a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and from 2005 Chair of the Center for Nutritional Epidemiology and Cancer Prevention at the MRC in Cambridge. She also worked as a nutritional consultant for the UK Ministry of Health. A few days before her death, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her achievements .

Bingham, who counted tennis and cooking to her hobbies, first married Roger Bingham in 1970 and Simon Rodwell in 2000. In 2009 she succumbed to prolonged cancer.
