Shelby Flint (born September 17, 1939 in North Hollywood , California ) is an American singer who was active in the pop , folk and jazz music scene from the 1960s .

Artistic career

Flint learned to play the piano and guitar at the age of six. In Van Nuys , a district of Los Angeles , she attended public school and graduated from Birmingham High School in Los Angeles in 1957. She then joined the songwriting team around Barry De Vorzon . At the age of 19 she recorded her first single in the summer of 1958 with the New York record company Cadence Records . She wrote the A-side title I Will Love You herself, the B-side title Oh I Miss Him So was a joint effort with De Vorzon. Since the record was not accepted by the audience, she turned to folk music and founded a corresponding vocal trio.

In 1960 De Vorzon founded his own record company called Valiant and invited Flint to sing a new single with him. Again two tracks were selected from Flint's songwriting repertoire and the first Valiant single came out in November 1960, the two songs written and sung by Shelby Flint Angel On My Shoulder and Somebody . The song Angel on My Shoulder appeared for the first time on December 26, 1960 in the Hot 100 of the US music magazine Billbord and rose to number 22 in the following weeks. It was six years before a Shelby title was re-inducted into the Hot 100. In 1966 Valiant brought out a single with Flint, on the A-side of which she interpreted a version of Your Fate to the Wind by jazz musician Vince Guaraldi . Her version reached number 61 on the Hot 100. It was Flint's 13th single on Valiant, and her last single. In 1968 the record label Warner Bros. released a single with their two successful titles Angel on My Shoulder and Cast Your Fate to the Wind , and this ended Shelby Flint's record career, which also includes three Valiant long-playing records.

In the 1970s, Flint found employment in film. She appeared as a singer in the films Snoopy (1972), Breezy ( Meeting in the Morning , 1973) and The Rescuers ( Bernard and Bianca - Die Mäusepolizei , 1977). The song she sang in this film, Someone's Waiting for You , was nominated for an Oscar in 1978 for best movie song . In the television film Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July , she was part of the cast.

At the beginning of the 1980s, Flint turned to jazz. She released the jazz album You've Been On Mind in 1982 , with which she proved that she could also be successful in this genre. She performed with jazz greats like Chick Corea , Al Jarreau and Gregg Karukas , where she presented herself not only as a singer, but also as an instrumentalist. She appeared on numerous tours that took her not only through the United States, but also to Europe. The renowned jazz critic Leonard Feather described her as “a technically skilled artist with a pure voice and a broad spectrum”.
