history

Shenandoah was founded between 1820 and 1835. Among the first settlers was the farmer Peter Kehley, who later discovered the occurrence of anthracite coal in a nearby river. During the American Civil War, the city experienced an upswing through the operation of several coal mines, in which mainly anthracite coal was mined. The town was considered a hotbed of the Molly Maguire miners' secret society around 1870 . After English, Welsh, Irish and German immigrants originally settled in the area, a strong influx of immigrants from eastern and southern European countries began after 1870 and the population grew to almost 30,000 residents in 1920. In 1902, Shenandoah had more bars per 1,000 people than any other city in the world; according to Ripley's Believe It or Not! Shenandoah was the most populous square mile in the United States. The collapse of the coal industry after World War II hit the community hard and miners emigrated to find work elsewhere.

Shenandoah is the only Pennsylvania city served by three different railroad lines.

Church history

Several original parishes were founded in the city by Eastern European immigrants:

  • "St. Georg Lithuanian Catholic Church "was founded in 1872 and is considered the oldest Lithuanian Roman Catholic parish in the United States. The church was consecrated in 1891.
  • Andrew Strupinskas (1828-1892) was the first Roman Catholic pastor for Polish emigrants in Pennsylvania. In 1872 he founded the “St. Casimir Roman Catholic Church ”in Shenandoah, which is considered to be the oldest Polish parish in the eastern United States. A memorial stone was donated by Rev. Msgr. JA Karalius in 1971.
  • "St. Michael Greek Catholic Church “was founded in November 1886 as the oldest Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church in the United States.

According to the 2000 census , Shenandoah had a population of 5,624. 152 of these lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 2,649 households and 1,380 families. The population density was 1,433 inhabitants per square kilometer. 3,339 residential units were recorded. The racial the population was composed of 97.4 percent white, 0.3 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and 1.1 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.6 percent said they came from more than one ethnic group. 2.8 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,649 households, 20.0 percent had children or young people living with them. 32.5 percent were married couples living together, 13.5 percent were single mothers, and 47.9 percent were non-families. 42.9 percent were single households and 26.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.07 and the average family size was 2.84.

The population was distributed among 19.0 percent under 18 years of age, 7.5 percent from 18 to 24 years of age, 23.3 percent from 25 to 44 years of age, 21.8 percent from 45 to 64 years of age and 28.5 percent from 65 years of age or older. The mean age ( median ) was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 84.1 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 80.6 males.

The median income for a household (median) was 18 714  US $ , and the median income for a family $ 26,910. Males had a median income of $ 24,289 and females $ 19,783. The per capita income was $ 12,562. 16.2 percent of families and 20.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line, including 32.3 percent of residents under the age of 18 and 16.1 percent of residents aged 65 or older.
