Sherard Osborn
Sherard Osborn (born April 25, 1822 in Madras , India , † May 6, 1875 in London ) was a British rear admiral and promoter of polar research .
biography
Osborn joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman in 1837 and, after completing his training, took part in the First Opium War from 1841 to 1842 . In 1846 he was promoted to lieutenant captain . In both 1849 and 1852 to 1855 he was in command of ships on expeditions in search of the polar explorer John Franklin . At the beginning of the second expedition he was promoted to frigate captain, before he was appointed captain of the sea in 1855 . Already at this time he was involved in polar research and was particularly dedicated to the Arctic .
He was then from 1855 to 1856 in command of the British naval squadron in the Sea of Azov during the Crimean War and also took part in a leading position in the Second Opium War between 1857 and 1859 . He was later involved in laying a submarine cable between Great Britain and Australia , with the Osborn Deep in the Indian Ocean being named after him. In 1873 he was promoted to rear admiral.
Shortly before his death in 1875 he was one of the organizers of the intended Arctic expedition by George Nares and Clements Markham .
Osborn wrote several books and magazines that dealt with Arctic research and polar explorers. His most important publications include Eighteen Months in the Polar Regions (1852), Journals of McClure (1856) and Fate of Sir John Franklin (1860).
