Shields Warren (born February 26, 1898 in Cambridge (Massachusetts) , † July 1, 1980 in Rochester (New Hampshire) ) was an American pathologist and radiation specialist.

Live and act

Warren was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His grandfather, William Fairfield Warren (1933–1929), was the founding president of Boston University and his father was the dean of the College of Liberal Arts there . Shields Warren earned a bachelor's degree from Boston University and then studied medicine at Harvard Medical School , with an MD in 1923 as a degree ( professional doctorate ). From 1927 he was director of pathology at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston , a position he held for more than 50 years. He was also Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School . From 1928 to 1955 he was also director of the Massachusetts State Tumor Diagnostic Service and from 1947 to 1952 the Department of Biology and Medicine of the United States Atomic Energy Commission .

Warren initially dealt with research into diabetes mellitus . Later he turned to cancer research and was able to show that there are different sensitivities to cancer . Warren made significant contributions to radiation biology , he can be considered one of the founders of this scientific field. So he was able to refute the law of Bergonié and Tribondeau . Warren led the first systematic work on fallout (fallout) by and treated (and examined) the victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki . As a proponent of the civil use of atomic energy , he dealt intensively with aspects of radiation protection . He also researched the use of radioactive isotopes in medical diagnostics and therapy, from which the field of nuclear medicine later developed.

Since 1956, Warren was on the Board of Directors of Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals , a manufacturer of radionuclides .
