Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 ( Japanese ペ ル ソ ナ 4 , Perusona 4 ), or P4 for short, is a role-playing game from the Japanese development studio Atlus for Sony's PlayStation 2 .

It is the fourth installment in the Persona series , which in turn is a spin-off of the Megami Tensei series. If you include the second game of the Persona 2 two- part game , it is already the fifth part of the series. Shigenori Soejima was responsible for the character design and the artistic direction .

The game was released in Japan in July 2008, in America in December 2008 and in Europe in March 2009. In contrast to its predecessor, P4 also contained a bonus CD with the soundtrack in Europe .

In 2011 the game was adapted as the anime television series Persona 4: The Animation .

In Europe, a revised version of Persona 4 appeared for the PlayStation Vita in spring 2013 with the title Persona 4 Golden . In addition to new characters, this also contained other tasks that expand the story.

On June 13, 2020, a PC version of Persona 4 Golden with high-resolution graphics was published on the Steam online service .

content

The youngster Yū Narukami moves in with his uncle and therefore changes to the high school in the city of Inaba. There he quickly meets new friends. But soon a series of murders haunted the city. Yū and his friends soon discover that the deaths were linked to a mysterious midnight television channel that viewers are drawn into. In the world of the television network, they are confronted with their dark selves, which they have to deal with before receiving a protective spirit. This persona called the guardian spirit helps them solve the murders in the parallel world.

Game mechanics

Like its predecessor, Persona 4 is an RPG with elements of a Ren'ai simulation .

The player goes to school, takes part-time jobs and builds relationships with others. As in the previous series, these relationships play a major role, because they enable him to create stronger personas . The personae are reflections of the self that give the player different abilities. These skills, in turn, are necessary in order to survive in a parallel world in which the player experiences the role-playing aspect of the game.

Changes in Persona 4 Golden

  • The shuffle time has been completely changed and is similar to the shuffle time from Persona 3.
  • A new character named Marie was introduced.
  • The playable length of the plot was extended by six weeks and an epilogue in the summer vacation of the following school year.
  • The protagonist can sneak out of the house at night and go to the shopping street, meet friends there and spend time with them.
  • In the course of the game, the protagonist receives a scooter that can be used to travel to the nearest major city and to a beach. The city contains a fashion shop, a cinema which the protagonist can visit with friends and a crane machine.
  • Two new arcanas with new personae have been introduced: The Aeon and The Jester / Hunger.
  • A few new events have been added to the game.
  • The number of possible endings of the game has been increased by two more to a total of seven possible endings.
  • An optional dungeon has been introduced.
  • A so-called TV overlay was introduced, which enables the player to view additional content during free play. This includes concept art, commercials and poster images, the game's soundtrack, the archive for the anime scenes used in the game, a ten-part series of lectures on the Jungian philosophy and a three-part interactive quiz show in which players can prove their trivial knowledge of the game.
  • The newly introduced Vox Populi system allows players connected to the Internet to record their daily planning. For the current day, Vox Populi shows the five most popular activities of previous players.
  • With the help of the new SOS system in dungeons, players connected to the Internet can request help from other players or provide requested help at the push of a button. If a player starts a fight after requesting help, his team members receive healing in relation to the number of players who came to help. When receiving aid, a postcard is also sent, the content of which can be written in advance. The supported player can later view these messages in the Velvet Room.
  • The level of difficulty of the game can be changed during the game and adjusted in several stages. In the regular game, the difficulty level could only be set in four levels at the beginning of the game.
  • The soundtrack has been expanded to include several music tracks.
  • More dialogues were recorded. In the English language edition, the characters Chie and Teddie received new voice actors.
  • More personas and skills have been added.
  • The protagonist can catch beetles for fishing and run a vegetable garden with his cousin.
  • The side quests list has been increased to a total of 69 side quests. Various quests of the fox received changes.
  • Various innovations in the combat system: The combat behavior of several opponents has been modified, team members can spontaneously continue the attack of a friend with a small animation, team members who are not participating in the fight can spontaneously intervene in the fight.
  • The protagonist and his friends can wear different costumes in the television world.
  • In the Japanese and Korean versions, a series of interviews with the twelve voice actors for the main characters was part of the TV overlay. However, this was removed from the American and European versions because a translation into English or a new edition with the English voice actors could not be guaranteed in time for the publication date.

reception

According to the German magazine Animania , the game is praised for the exciting, symbolic story. However, the slow progress of the story is also criticized.
