The Shinkansen -series L0 ( Jap. 新幹線L0系電車 Shinkansen L0-kei densha ) is an under development of Japanese high-speed - Maglev train , the future on the extended Yamanashi -Teststrecke, a part of the planned until 2027 Chuo Shinkansen , is used . Its name is made up of L for linear motor and 0 , a homage to the "original" Shinkansen of the 0 series , which is intended to mark the beginning of a new era.

history

L0 series as a 7-car formation on a test drive in August 2014

In 2006, it was decided to expand the 18.4 km long track in Yamanashi Prefecture and to purchase 14 train parts. The aim is to analyze the operation of long compilations at over 500 km / h and to develop an economical maintenance operation for the vehicles. Four end wagons and ten intermediate wagons are procured in order to be able to form different formations. The prototype of the L0 series was presented to the public in November 2012. The presentation of the first five-part driverless set took place in mid-2013. Since August 2013, after five years of construction, 42.8 kilometers of test drives have been undertaken.

During a test run in April 2015, the train reached a record speed of 603 km / h.

In April 2020, new end cars and an intermediate car were presented to the public. They replace the respective wagons of the first prototype and should lead to a 13% reduction in air resistance, which should benefit both energy consumption and noise emissions. The new prototype has been in use since August 2020.

Technology and design

The series is based on the test vehicle MLX01 , which has completed tests on the Yamanashi track since 1998. As with the MLX01-901A, the front of the L0 end car has a 15-meter-long "nose" for ideal aerodynamics . Compared to its predecessor, the outer shell has been optimized for low air friction. This also serves to accelerate the vehicle, which is only running on rubber wheels, from standstill to 150 km / h as quickly as possible, in order to then bring out the electrodynamic levitation system, which acts like a cushion . The profile of the series is smaller than the previous Shinkansen, and unlike the MLX01-901A, it is also more rectangular in order to allow comfortable 2 + 2 seating inside. With a width of 2.9 m and a height of 3.1 m, the 28 m long end car 24 and the middle car with 24.3 m have 68 seats.

The painting with blue stripes on a white background is done in the corporate design of the Central Japan Railway Company and takes up the theme of "speed".
