The Shinkansen series 911 was a Japanese, six-axle diesel locomotive that was developed for towing and shunting operations of the Shinkansen series 0 on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen . At the time of their introduction, the locomotives were the fastest diesel locomotives in the world with a top speed of 160 km / h. Of the three units produced, two were scrapped before the Japanese State Railroad was split up and privatized , the last remaining unit was decommissioned in 1995 and then also scrapped.

description

The 911 series was derived from the DD51 diesel locomotive, but received a semi-streamlined car body, the design of which was similar to the later EF66 and DD54 series . The same type of engine from the DD51 series was used in the first locomotive built (1,000 hp at 1,500 revolutions; two engines), and a more powerful version was used in the two other locomotives (1,110 hp at 1,500 revolutions × 2). The series had hydrodynamic torque converters to adapt the tractive effort to the application (160 km / h or 92 km / h).

The top speed of the 911 series was 160 km / h, which could also be achieved when a fully occupied, 16-car long Shinkansen train from the 0 series was towed away.

Since this type of locomotive was developed for emergencies in Shinkansen operations, the 911 series has an additional diesel generator to supply the towed Shinkansen train with emergency power.

The locomotives had a blue base color with yellow areas on the front (similar, for example, to the JNR class 143 ).

business

Although the 911 series was developed as an emergency and towing locomotive, it was never used in an emergency on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, as the top speed, which is limited to 160 km / h, interfered with the tightly timed Shinkansen timetable, which started at 200 km / h was operated. Instead, the 911 series was used for the Doctor Yellow line inspection trains.
