The Shinkansen series 951 ( Japanese 新 幹線 951 形 電車 Shinkansen 951-gata densha ) was a two-part multiple unit to test the technology for a commercial operation of the Tōkaidō Shinkansen with speeds of up to 250 km / h.

Train formation

The train consisted of two cars: the 951-1 built by Kawasaki and the 951-2 built by Nippon Sharyo .

technology

Car body

The car bodies had the same dimensions as the trains of the Shinkansen series 0 : they were 25 m long, 3386 mm wide and 4490 mm high.

In order to obtain a lighter draft, aluminum alloys were used for the first time in box construction. Installation spaces have been provided in the underframe for the assembly of the equipment. To further reduce air resistance, the aerodynamic head shape of the Shinkansen series 0 was extended from 4.5 m to 6.5 m.

With a view to future use on the Sanyō Shinkansen , which was still under construction at that time, with its many tunnels , the car bodies were made pressure-proof for the first time and provided with a pressure protection fan. The air conditioning was not arranged on the roof, as in the 0 series, but installed under the floor, which gave the train a lower center of gravity .

The windows were widened compared to the 0 series and provided with electric blinds in car 951-1 , which made a thin vertical central muntin necessary for the guide rail of the blind. Car 951-2 was fitted with electrically operated curtains that did not require a central rung.

Like the class 0 trains, the cars were provided with seats in the 3 + 2 arrangement. Car 951-1 had 40 seats, car 951-2 had 50 seats.

Electrical equipment

Both cars had pantographs with crossed lower scissors at the inner end of the car, similar to the PS200 type that was used on the 0 series. The one on car 951-1 was type PS9010K, the one on car 951-2 was type PS-1010A. Normally only the pantograph on car 951-2 was used.

history

The train was presented to the press on March 26, 1969, the trial operation on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen began on July 2, 1969. On February 24, 1972, the train on the Sanyo Shinkansen set a new world speed record with 286 km / h. The highest speed was reached between Himeji and Nishi-Akashi . The class 951 thus set the world record set by the Shinkansen class 1000 in 1963.

The train was officially retired on April 11, 1980.

Whereabouts
The car 951-1 in 1994 donated to the Hikari Plaza Community Center, where he can be visited.

The car 951-2 was taken to the Railway Technical Research Institute near Kokubunji , Tokyo, where the vehicle was used for tests on the roller dynamometer . After the car had been stored in the institute for several years without further use, it was scrapped in 2008.
