The Shiny Toys is a festival for time-based experimental culture in Mülheim an der Ruhr . It combines experimental music, light art and short film into an interdisciplinary panopticon of the avant-garde cultural scene. It presents local and international artists who experiment with analog and digital technologies and sound out the interfaces between these presentation principles . In addition, exhibitions, workshops and lectures are offered. Since 2010 it has been held annually in the roundhouse and other venues.

It is organized by the Ringlokschuppen Ruhr, the Makroscope - Center for Art and Technology and mex - intermediale and experimental music projects e. V. in Dortmund in cooperation with the cassette and vinyl label Ana Ott. The event is funded by the Ministry for Family, Youth, Culture and Sport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Mülheim an der Ruhr cultural organization. The analog / digital project is also supported by the NRW Kultursekretariat Wuppertal.

history

The festival owes its creation to the proclamation of the cultural capital - Metropolis Ruhr 2010 . The idea of establishing a platform for time-based experimental culture in the Ruhr area had been around for a long time. The Ruhr area is home to a number of independent artists and media professionals who experiment with analog and digital technology in order to develop new worlds of sound and images. Jan Ehlen, member of the artist collective RaumZeitPiraten, felt it was high time to give the spectrum of sound, light, space and research a play area and to make it accessible to the general public. Together with Werner Nekes and Jerome Krüger (Jerry Jerome) he founded the festival for time-based experimental culture.

In 2010 the 1st Shiny Toys Festival took place in the roundhouse. Initially developed as a local scene event, over the next few years it grew into a festival with international artists that is well known far beyond the Ruhr area . In the following year, the bulwark in Moers joined as another venue. In 2014 the macroscope in Mülheim was added, followed by the Bunker Hagen during the Urban Lights Ruhr 2015 and 2016 the Kultur im Turm e. V. in Wuppertal. In 2017, mex joined the project in the Künstlerhaus Dortmund.

In addition to multidisciplinary light and shadow projections, the minimalist and electronic music culture gained more importance. Sound interpreters and DJs from all over the world accompany the play of lights with their live improvisations and thus become part of the work of art themselves. But not always with "normal" instruments. So developed computer parts, for example, to produce sound collages used and a Vokalakrobatin with overtone singing accompanied. An interpreter hanging on the piano strings elicits sounds by shifting his weight and using his or her holder - or you simply take vegetables for a flute concert.

Workshops at the Shiny Toys Festival are also popular. They should get the visitor out of his passivity and invite him to become artistically active. When the Macroscope joined in 2014, lectures and exhibitions on the history of experimental film and media art will also take place.

Werner Nekes died in early 2017 at the age of 72. In his honor, a film was shown in Hall 2 of the roundhouse. Three of his most famous experimental films were shown:

  • DIWAN , a film anthology in 5 parts from 1973.
  • AMALGAM I - IV , four-part experimental film about the relationship between form and color and fusion from 1974 and
  • LAGARDO , an avant-garde experimental fictional film about the different types of communication and the misunderstandings that resulted from it from 1977.

Surname

Thaumatrope

The name "Shiny Toys" is derived from the wonder disks ( Thaumatrop ) that have been known since the beginning of the 18th century . Charles Babbage called them "Philosophical Toys". By rotating the individual images from the front and back, a new, imaginary overall image is created. "Shiny Toys" is a modern version of the pre-cinematographic toy with projection technology and audiovisual media. Through overlapping, the individual techniques combine to form a new unit in the artistic development process.
