Shirley Knauer

Shirley K. Knauer (* 1976 in Fürth , Bavaria ) is a German biologist who specializes in translational cancer research . She has been W2 Professor for Molecular Biology II at the Center for Medical Biotechnology (ZMB) at the University of Duisburg-Essen since 2016 .

Career

Knauer studied at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg 1995-2000 Biology . She then received her doctorate in pharmacy at the Chemotherapeutic Research Institute Georg-Speyer-Haus in Frankfurt am Main in 2005 and worked there until 2006 and from 2007 in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Oncology of the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic of the University Medical Center at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz active. There she completed her habilitation in 2008 in the subject of "Molecular Medicine". After taking up her junior professorship in 2010, she has been W2 Professor for Molecular Biology II at the Center for Medical Biotechnology at the University of Duisburg-Essen since the beginning of 2016 .

In her research, she tries to elucidate cell biological processes down to the last detail and, at the same time, to develop new anti-cancer drugs and appropriate screening methods for the search for active substances . She has already received several awards for this balancing act between basic research and application. a. with the German Life Science Award 2013 from the Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM) and Hoffmann-La Roche . Furthermore, she was a member of the Global Young Faculty of the Mercator Foundation from 2011 to 2014 .
