The Chakhyung Monastery ( Tib. Bya khyung dgon pa ; Chinese 夏琼寺 , Pinyin Xiàqióng sì ) Autonomous County Hualong (Bayen) of Hui of Haidong in the Chinese province of Qinghai (about 95 km from Xining ) is one of the major large yellow Hat (Gelugpa) -Lamaklöster of Tibetan Buddhism in Central Amdo and one of the oldest. It belongs to the community (Chinese) Chafu 查 甫 乡 .
The place is the birthplace of the Tibetan Buddhist reformer Tsongkhapa (1357-1419) founded Gelugpa School of Tibetan Buddhism . Here he began his training. The monastery was founded in 1349 by Chöje Döndrub Rinchen (1309-1385), the first teacher of Tsongkhapa. In its prime, the monastery had more than 4,130 monks and there were 75 temples in it; its total area is twenty hectares . The monastery is a monument of Qinghai Province . It has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China since 2013 .
